Description:

There are almost as many theories about the aging process as there are researchers working in the field. This stems from the fact that scientists do not know why animals grow old and examine every aspect of an animal's physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology in attempting to answer this important question. The current trend among biologists studying the way animals grow old is to keep the theories in mind, but to focus their attention on dominant age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's or cardiovascular disease. This new volume in The New Biology set tackles the fascinating subject of aging, from natural processes to technological developments, and describes past and present research into extending the human life span. Different theories about aging and the studies of the fruit fly and housefly, which have provided a basis of knowledge in this field, are presented in a clear and concise manner. The use of hormone therapy is explored as a possible way to reverse the effects of aging, the use of antioxidants is discussed as another area being pursued by scientists seeking to find the key to extending the human life span, and possible side effects and monetary expenses are also examined. Concluding with a collection of biographies of influential researchers in this field, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index, Aging presents the full story about the hopes, efforts, progress, and realities of this timeless topic.

The New Biology offers an intriguing overview of the latest technologies in the study of living organisms, using straightforward language and striking line illustrations and photographs. Since the phrase was coined three decades ago, new biology has come to include nuclear transfer technology (animal cloning), recombinant DNA technology, gene therapy, and stem cell therapy, important advances that are all explored in this set.

Aging tackles all aspects of this fascinating subject, from natural processes to technological developments, and describes past and present research into extending the human life span. Author Joseph Panno discusses scientists' attempts to understand the aging process and how their resulting theories, many generated from the studies of the fruit fly and housefly, have provided a basis of knowledge in the field of gerontology. The recent trend in gerontology, the study of the mechanisms of the aging process, is to search for genes that have a demonstrable effect on life span, the so-called longevity genes. Scientists have discovered a number of these genes, providing valuable insight into the cellular mechanisms of aging that may lead to the development of truly effective antiaging therapies. Panno examines not only the use of hormone therapy and antioxidants, including other possible ways to reverse the effects of aging, but also their side effects and monetary investments. In a clear and concise manner, this volume presents the efforts, progress, and realities of this intriguing topic.

Aging includes an index, a glossary of terms, a helpful list of Internet resources, and an array of historical and recent print sources. Keyed to topics not always covered in science classes, The New Biology set is essential for young readers who require information on contemporary issues in biology.

Description:

Aging has long since been ascribed to the gradual accumulation of DNA mutations in the genome of somatic cells. However, it is only recently that the necessary sophisticated technology has been developed to begin testing this theory and its consequences. Vijg critically reviews the concept of genomic instability as a possible universal cause of aging in the context of a new, holistic understanding of genome functioning in complex organisms resulting from recent advances in functional genomics and systems biology. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of current research, as well as a look ahead to the design of strategies to retard or reverse the deleterious effects of aging. This is particularly important in a time when we are urgently trying to unravel the genetic component of aging-related diseases. Moreover, there is a growing public recognition of the imperative of understanding more about the underlying biology of aging, driven by continuing demographic change.

This is a single-authored monograph about the biology of aging, specifically about the genome and aging. It reviews how DNA is involved in the process of aging. Its purpose is to review the biology of the genome and to review how changes in DNA affect aging. Such a review is very timely at a point when knowledge about DNA and the genome is exploding. The author succeeds brilliantly in meeting his goals. The audience here is the community of biological and medical scientists researching aging. Geriatricians are able to read this book as well. The author is one of the world's experts in this field. The author has carefully organized this book so that the flow is excellent. A review of the theories of aging is followed by reviews of genome structure and function. Then come discussion of genomic instability and repair. Then the altered DNA as a mechanism of aging is covered. The book concludes with a look towards future work.

Description:

For centuries people have been puzzled by the inevitability of human aging. For most of the second half of the twentieth century aging remained a mystery, or an unsolved biological problem. At the end of the 20th century a remarkable scientific discovery emerged. It was not a single discovery in the usual sense, because it was based on a series of important interconnected insights over quite a long period of time. These insights made it possible for the very first time to understand the biological reasons for aging in animals and man. It can already be said, however, that the many observations and insights that explain aging will not be accepted as established knowledge for a long time. The field is still full of scientists, and non-scientists, who are just happy to go on speculating about the "mystery" of aging. The aim of this book is to dispel ignorance by explaining in non-technical language what are the reasons for aging and the myth of excessive prolongation of life.

This is a single-authored discussion of aging, its causes, mechanisms, and implications, written for a lay public. Its purpose is to explain the mechanisms of aging and to dispel exaggerated claims of anti-aging medicine. These are worthy objectives and the book meets them all in style. The book is written for a lay audience. The author is one of the world's experts in aging and achieves a masterful synthesis in this book. This is a lay distillation of the author's “Understanding Ageing” (Cambridge University Press, 1995), with added thoughtful editorial comments. The broad extensive knowledge of this author is plainly evident in this pleasurable compact book. Explanations of why and how we age, the nature of aging in the biological kingdom, and the false hopes of anti-aging medicine are woven into a coherent, easily digestible form. There is a very well annotated list of references and a helpful glossary. The elegant British style of biological writing evident here makes this book a particular pleasure to read.

Description:

This book draws together contributions from some of the leading investigators in the field of autism to consider specific problem areas in current research. Each contributor brings expertise from a different field, providing a balanced view of the whole spectrum of study of this disorder. It covers four main areas:

* Twin and family studies indicate that the heritability of the underlying liability to autism exceeds 90% and point to a multifactorial causation, involving a relatively small number of susceptibility genes. The book discusses this issue in detail, along with the problem of why some additional symptoms are associated with autism while others are not.

* New techniques are available for examining the neurobiology of autism. The book contains results from imaging studies showing the contributions of different brain regions to autism. It includes neuropathological data and examines the neuropharmacology of autism.

* There is considerable discussion concerning the fundamental psychological deficit in children with autism. There is good evidence that "Theory of Mind" deficits are associated with autism and this issue is discussed in the book, as are other competing possibilities.

* The most important practical question facing medical and psychological practitioners is how to help children with autism. The evidence relating to possible psychological or psychiatric interventions for rehabilitation of children with autism is examined in detail. Drug treatments have generally been disappointing in this field and there is one chapter devoted specifically to this problem.

The book focuses ultimately on intervention studies and so is of practical relevance to people interested in helping autistic children. In addition, it provides a very convenient summary of the principal controversies which currently exist in research on autism.

Description:

Autism is a baffling brain disorder that profoundly affects children's communication and social skills. It is also a spectrum disorder, which means it can occur in a variety of forms and intensity. Most cases of autism appear before a child's third birthday. Recent years have marked a stunning rise in the number of children diagnosed as autistic, with the U.S. Department of Education reporting a 173-percent rise in the number of autistic students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Act between the 1992-93 and 1997-98 school years. Yet much remains unknown about autism, and controversy surrounds everything from defining the disease to diagnosing it to treating it - with theories about its cause ranging from vaccines to faulty genes to maternal personality. "The Encyclopedia of Autism Spectrum Disorders" provides a much-needed reference guide to this disease. Approximately 500 entries address the different types of autism, causes and treatments, institutions, associations, leading scientists and research, social impact, and much more. The book tackles a complex and daunting subject in clear language suitable for the general reader. Appendixes include major relevant organizations, sources for further reading and research, a glossary, and a bibliography. Entries include: Atypical autism; Asperger's Syndrome; Causes of autism; Developmental disability; Early intervention program; Genes and autism; High-functioning autistic disorders; Individualized education program; Language delay; Mainstreaming; Nonfluent aphasia; Patterning; Safety issues; Tactile defensiveness; and Vitamins and autism.

This volume, the first in the series, explores the high-functioning group of people within the spectrum of autism disorders. It is the culmination of over a decade of clinical work and research, including the most current information available about this group. This book explores the history of high-functioning autism; diagnosis of the disorder; assessment; and treatment for the individual and their families. Written in a style that is accessible to both seasoned clinicians and concerned lay persons, Understanding Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism is a unique resource.

This title compares Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism. It provides histories of the diagnoses and information for differentiating between them. The objective is to provide an overview of Asperger's syndrome and high functioning autism. This is a worthy objective because there is a general lack of information about both disorders. The authors meet the objective. According to the authors, the book is written for parents and professionals. The authors were credible authorities. The book covers the histories of both disorders as well as issues appropriate to clinicians, such as diagnosis and interventions. The sections that provide information about differential diagnosis are particularly helpful, because the disorders are similar. I would have liked to have seen more in-depth case studies. The ones that are provided are quite brief and do not illustrate treatment techniques in as much detail as I would have liked.

This informative and practical guide to the Miller Method presents an entirely new and dynamic perspective on advancing the body organization, social, and communicative skills of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Taking a cognitive developmental systems approach that uses elevation to build body awareness and focus the children on people and objects, the Miller Method[registered] works on the premise that children with ASDs learn more effectively when their whole bodies are physically and repetitively involved in a learning process or 'system'; a completely different approach from the more traditional schoolroom arrangement in which children learn while sitting at a desk. Chapters outline the underlying principles of the Miller Method and its practical application, and cover major issues such as communication skills and social play, and day-to-day behavioural issues including tantrums, aggression, and toilet training. A chapter on research outcomes demonstrates the efficacy of the method in practice. This practical resource is essential reading for parents and professionals living and working with children with ASDs.

Description:

More than 22 million children under five are now obese or overweight. Globally, an estimated 10% of school-aged children, between five and 17 years old, are overweight or obese, and the situation is getting worse. Although recognised clinically for some time as an important condition that increases risk of ill-health in affected individuals, it is only recently, that obesity has been recognised as a population-wide problem that requires preventive action. Obesity is a major contributor to diseases and disability, the associated health costs are enormous, obesity has already reached epidemic proportions in many countries, and incidence is continuing to increase in children and adults. Disturbingly the epidemic is not confined to developed countries, with many developing countries and those in transition affected. While recognised as a major population health problem, our understanding of the causes of the epidemic is poor, there has been relatively little population-based research that has focused on the prevention of unhealthy weight gain, and as a consequence knowledge regarding how and where best to intervene is limited. This book draws together the existing literature and expertise and with a view to helping set the agenda for public health action. The book is divided into three sections. Part 1 provides an overview of the context of the problem. It examines the epidemiology of obesity, the role of behavioural factors, socio-cultural factors and environmental factors in the obesity epidemic. Part 2 reviews interventions across a range of key settings and in different population groups - drawing on existing research that has aimed to increase physical activity, promote healthy eating and prevent obesity at a population level. Given how little research there is that has specifically examined the effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing obesity per se, Part 3 explores potential opportunities to prevent obesity.

The aim of this book is to provide public health professionals with a state-of-the-science overview of the causes of the obesity epidemic and a case for prevention and control. The factors that have caused the obesity epidemic: fundamental changes in society that have led to declines in physical activity and changes in diet: will not be easy to modify. The authors present a clear description of what is known about the causes of the epidemic, and a cogent review of possible solutions. This book is written for a broad audience. Students, researchers, teachers, clinicians, and public health practitioners will find it clear, concise, and easy to read. The author has brought together over 25 national experts who bring a diversity of experience and expertise in the causes and consequences of obesity. The authors present a thorough review of the factors that have contributed to the increasing rates of obesity. They also identify prevention and control strategies that work and save money. However, there is little discussion about the real-life barriers that confront communities who attempt to implement these programs. Who will pay for worksite interventions? K-12 physical education works, but schools are eliminating programs due to funding shortfalls. Fast food industry marketing promotes unhealthy eating but what can be done about it? Topics are repeated in several chapters (e.g., definitions of obesity). This is bothersome when reading the book cover to cover, but permits each chapter to stand on its own.

Description:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects millions of people in western society. Since the introduction of laparoscopic techniques in the 1990s, it is now one of the most common indications for surgery. This multi-authored text provides information on the pathophysiology of GERD, appropriate medical management, and proper indications for and performance of surgical and endoscopic procedures for GERD. Thousands of patients will experience inadequate relief from medical therapy or will develop complications from their procedures or recurrent or new symptoms afterwards; this text describes in detail the proper evaluation and management of such patients. Beginning with an overview of the current understanding of the pathophysiology of GERD, the book moves onto new information regarding tissue susceptibility, the role of bile and digestive enzymes, and cyclic changes in LES tone. The next chapters are devoted to standard therapeutic options for GERD, including lifestyle changes, pharmacologic therapy, and surgery. In addition, newer endoscopic treatments such as Stretta, Endocinch, injection of bulking agents, etc, are described. Subsequent chapters focus on the causes for failure of medical, endoscopic, and surgical therapies. The remainder of the text is a detailed examination of medical, endoscopic, and surgical remedies for these treatment failures. This text is essential to any physician who manages patients with GERD, including internists, gastroenterologists, general surgeons, and thoracic surgeons.

GERD is one of the most common diseases affecting Western society. Up to 20 million adults in the United States suffer from GERD at considerable economic cost. Although medical and surgical GERD therapy is largely successful, because of the high prevalence of the disease, even a failure rate of 5% results in large numbers of ineffectively treated and unhappy patients. This book deals with the management of patients who have failed anti-reflux medical and surgical therapy. The objectives are to review current medical and surgical management of GERD, to define what constitutes failure of these therapies and to delineate approaches to the management of these treatment failures. This is both a common and important problem in every gastroenterologist's practice and the book provides a superb approach to these often vexing clinical situations. This multi-authored book is aimed at physicians who manage patients with GERD, including internists, gastroenterologists, general and thoracic surgeons. The authors (all credible experts in their fields) are predominantly from the United States, but also include some from Canada and Europe. Features: The book provides information on the pathophysiology of GERD, appropriate medical management, and proper indications for and performance of surgical and endoscopic procedures for GERD. There is particular focus on those patients who fail to respond to medical therapy or who develop complications from their procedures or experience new or recurrent symptoms. Beginning with an overview of the current understanding of the pathophysiology of GERD, new information is presented regarding the role of bile and cyclic changes in lower esophageal sphincter tone. There are sections on standard therapeutic options for GERD such as lifestyle changes, medical therapy, and surgery. In an excellent chapter, newer anti-reflux endoscopic therapies, including Stretta, Endocinch and injection of bulking agents are described. The most informative and enjoyable chapters deal with the causes and the subsequent management of medical, surgical, and endoscopic treatment failures. Excellent color illustrations abound and many useful algorithms enhance the utility of this outstanding book.

Description:

Thyroid cancer shows the fastest rate of increase in women in the USA. There is an urgent need to better understand its underlying causes, explore efficient and sensitive methods for its diagnosis, new methods of treatment and follow-up, based on the recent advances in technology.

Molecular Basis of Thyroid Cancer brings together top-flight experts from across the globe to consider present state of the art treatment and techniques and what the future holds. The product of this effort is invaluable to endocrinologists, particularly those with an interest in the thyroid, molecular oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and those in biotechnology intent on devising innovative therapies for cancer.

This book discusses and evaluates recent advances in the molecular basis of the pathogenesis and treatment of the various forms of thyroid cancer. The purpose is to convey a better understanding of the factors that cause thyroid cancer, as well as to explore novel strategies for its treatment, focusing on recent advances in molecular biology. There is a significant, and rapidly-growing, literature concerning the molecular biology of thyroid cancer, and this book is a welcome addition that allows these novel findings to be placed in perspective. There will be a relatively narrow audience for this book. In particular, it will appeal significantly more to thyroidologists than to general endocrinologists. In addition, it will be interesting to nuclear medicine physicians, pathologists, and oncologists if they have a specific interest in thyroid cancer. Features: The book covers a wide range of topics, ranging from the pathology of thyroid tumors to specific molecular events in the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer. In this process, chapters devoted to specific molecules important in thyroid cancer are included. In addition, information on NIS, and how it relates to thyroid cancer imaging and treatment is discussed in detail. Finally, molecular genetics, for example the genetics of medullary thyroid cancer, is also included. The chapters are well written and informative, though there is occasional overlap.

Description:

Killeen (Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Minnesota) offers an introduction to molecular pathology that encompasses both applied and theoretical knowledge. Writing in a readable style, he reviews the basic concepts of human molecular biology, explains principles of the most commonly used analytical methods, and discusses the molecular principles that underlie both inherited diseases and acquired genetic abnormalities that lead to cancer. Using common viral infections as examples, he applies these molecular methods to the detection of microbial pathogens, and highlights the importance of pharmacogenetics and identity testing in the clinical laboratory.

This is a concise and fairly comprehensive book on the principles and current applications of molecular pathology. The author's purpose was to create a comprehensive yet concise text on the relatively new and rapidly growing field of molecular pathology. This book would be useful to anyone interested in the basic principles of clinical molecular pathology. Given the increasing prominence of this technology in the routine clinical laboratory, this book would especially useful to those who actually perform or use the results of tests performed with this technology (e.g., pathology/laboratory medicine residents, pathologists in practice, laboratory directors, geneticists, genetic counselors, pediatricians, infectious disease practitioners, hematologists, clinical laboratory scientists in training or practice, etc.). This seemingly small book of only 11 chapters nicely summarizes a broad and rapidly growing diagnostic field. The first few chapters define basic terminology and discuss basic principles. The fourth chapter is a very useful summary of molecular methods employed by the clinical laboratory. Of note and with the exception of a brief discussion of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), this chapter is devoted to "grind and find" technology - i.e., that which does not rely on procedures in which tissue is left intact and tissue architecture is important in test result interpretation. The remaining chapters discuss specific applications of these technologies to disease states - hematological malignancies, heritable disorders, cancer, pharmacogenetics, identity testing, and testing for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).

Description:

The second edition of Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases presents discussions of gene identification, mutation detection, and clinical and research applications for over 100 genetic immune disorders--disorders featuring an increased susceptibility to infections and, in certain conditions, an increased rate of malignancies and autoimmune disorders. Since the publication of the first edition, a flurry of new disease entities has been defined and new treatment regimens have been introduced, the most spectacular being successful treatment by gene therapy for two genotypes of combined immunodeficiency. The first edition marked a historic turning point in the field of immunodeficiencies, demonstrating that many of the disorders of the immune system could be understood at a molecular level. This new edition can proudly document the tremendous pace of progress in dissecting the complex immunologic networks responsible for protecting individuals from these disorders.

Description:

The most authoritative and comprehensive guide on RLS to date, this expertly written source examines the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of a condition affecting nearly 10% of the population. Ranging from basic science to therapeutics, Restless Legs Syndrome analyzes the many new and emerging medications impacting the management of this disorder and strives to address the explosion of research in the field.

In recent years RLS has gone from an unknown disorder to a household name. With this increase in recognition has also come an abundance of research to better understand this disorder. However, this extensive research is difficult for an individual to compile and is too broad to be covered well in a review article; making a book on this topic both timely and worthwhile.

Dr. Ondo is well respected and qualified to head such a project. He has extensive experience with RLS, participating in all aspects including direct patient care, clinical trials, and basic research. The book is directed at those who are involved in RLS research as well practicing clinicians who take care of RLS patients. Although some chapters are directed more to basic research and others to clinical aspects, it is a good cross reference for both groups.

The book concentrates on topics that may contribute to the underlying pathophysiology of RLS. Starting with basics in both sleep and areas important to RLS, such as CNS dopaminergic systems and iron regulation. It also covers areas of interest including putative sites for RLS pathology as well as associated disorders. The book then turns to the more clinical aspects of the disorder, discussing in detail the clinical criteria and summarizing the relevant treatment trials for RLS. Writing styles and the complexity of material varies between chapters. In an effort tomake chapters concise, some chapters present data in a manner that may make it difficult to understand without prior knowledge in the area. When using the book as a resource, it is better to use the table of contents and section headings in each chapter that highlight areas of interest.

An Update on Esophageal Diseases, the clinics

Gastroenterology Clinics of North America
Volume 37, Issue 4, Pages 763-1010 (December 2008)
An Update on Esophageal Diseases
Edited by G.W. Falk
Given the recent advances in esophageal diseases, the time is right for a comprehensive update in this area. An impressive array of internationally recognized experts has been assembled to synthesize for you new developments in the field of esophageal diseases. The first article in this issue provides an overview of our current understanding of new endoscopic imaging modalities and their current role in the diagnosis of esophageal diseases. The next two articles put into perspective the complex and rapidly evolving area of esophageal physiologic testing. Excellent and comprehensive reviews are provided of the current "tools of the trade" including high-resolution manometry, impedance testing, and the various approaches to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux. Some of these new diagnostic tests have provided us with a better understanding of some of the nuances of an old disease, namely achalasia. Much of the pioneering work of the Northwestern group is summarized in the next article that covers the many nuances of the modern approach to achalasia.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men and its progression is highly dependent on androgens and androgen receptors. However, even with treatment, eventually most prostate cancers progress. Studies of the mechanisms behind this progression leads to advances in treatments for androgen-related diseases. Our book discusses recent prostate cancer research, which includes the following topics: immunotherapy and chemotherapy; radiation, gene, hormonal, and androgen ablation therapies; basic mechanisms behind prostate cancer growth; how mechanisms can be used to treat prostate cancer; and research in newly developed mouse model systems. This book should be of interest as both a study guide and research reference to students, basic scientists, and clinicians.

Description:

The Psychotherapy in Clinical Practice series incorporates essential therapeutic principles into clinically relevant patient management. This second volume, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Clinicians, familiarizes clinicians with the theory and clinical use of cognitive behavioral therapy.

The book explains the historical development and theoretical foundations of cognitive behavioral therapy, the importance of individual case conceptualization, the patient-therapist relationship, the therapeutic process, and specific treatment techniques and presents models for the treatment of common psychiatric disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, and personality disorders. Several cases are presented at the beginning of the book and discussed as examples throughout the text.

This is an introduction to the principles, theories, and techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) presented through fictional case examples.

This book is intended to provide therapy students an introduction to CBT so they may understand the underpinnings of Aaron T. Beck's industrious work on cognitive theory as a basis for treating psychopathology. It is not intended to be an exhaustive book on the topic.

The author indicates that this book is intended for psychiatry residents. This focus, however, most likely stems from her background as a psychiatrist. The book is certainly applicable to graduate students in clinical and counseling psychology as well, and perhaps even other related fields. The author is a board member of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and has experience in CBT training and delivery.

This book presents three fictional case exemplars and follows them through the book to demonstrate key points. There is an introduction to the theories underlying CBT and a brief overview of major components, including automatic thoughts, rules, and core beliefs. Basic techniques, structuring sessions, and specific uses for mood, anxiety, and personality disorders are all covered. The book finishes with a chapter on medication adherence. It is concise and generally easy to read, but the lack of subsections in the chapters makes it difficult to skip to a particular topic quickly.

Description:

This highly illustrated book on one of the commonest eye disorders addresses both the effects and treatment of the condition itself, and the indications for associated underlying disease. Strabismus in patients of all ages is discussed, making the book an important and useful reference especially for clinical ophthalmologists and those in training, as well as for general physicians needing to understand the association with other disease.
The comprehensive text discusses every type of strabismus, the investigations and the various approaches to management, both surgical and non-surgical. Written by one of the world's leading authorities, this is an ideal reference for anyone managing patients with inherited or adult onset strabismus.

This is an introductory book designed to familiarize the ophthalmology resident and the general ophthalmologist with the fundamentals of strabismus. Sections on the neurophysiology of the visual pathways, strabismus in both childhood and adulthood, and management of strabismus are included.

This book is intended as an overview of the neurophysiologic basis of strabismus as well as the clinical manifestations and treatment of strabismus in both children and adults. Certainly the basic science concepts are of importance and are well summarized, but sections on the management of strabismus are somewhat general and lack enough detail to be used as a primary textbook.

The book is targeted at ophthalmology residents, general ophthalmologists, and other eye health professionals. It provides a good overview of the subject, although certain sections such as the usage of diagnostic testing in strabismus and the specific therapies for strabismus lack some detail. The author is a well-recognized authority on strabismus and amblyopia.

This concise introduction to strabismus includes excellent sections on neurophysiology and the concepts behind binocular vision, as well as a review of the assessment and management of childhood and adult strabismus. Detailed illustrations and excellent photographs complement the clearly written text and help to enhance the reader's comprehension of the material. This book also provides a short glossary of useful terms often encountered in strabismus. The author provides a well-written, general overview of the principles and manifestations of strabismus, though those readers seeking more detail about diagnosis and management may find it useful to use another book in conjunction with this one.

Description:

Based on Dr. Wright’s classic major reference, Handbook of Pediatric Retinal Disease outlines the latest findings in diagnosing retinal disorders in children's and the best available treatment options. Distilling the essentials of these somewhat uncommon disorders and diseases into a portable, complete and authoritative pocket reference, this handbook offers a complete picture of how to best treat pediatric patients. Specifically, the introductory chapters on the specifics of pediatric ophthalmology (embryology, post-natal development and the pediatric exam) will help newcomers to pediatric practice fully grasp the subtle differences in pediatric care. The chapters are written by leading experts in the field and are presented in a user-friendly format, relying on heavily illustrated in color plates, clinically helpful tables, charts, and decision-making guidelines. This approach will enable the practitioner (whether specialist or generalist) to make the most accurate diagnosis and choose the most effective treatment option.

This is a well-illustrated, fairly concise summary of pediatric retinal pathology. The authors propose that it can be used for parent education, and I admit many times a picture is truly worth 1,000 words. The chapters follow a logical progression, making most related topics grouped together.

This book is intended as a practical resource in the diagnosis and management of most retinal disorders found in the pediatric population. To the authors' credit, they go beyond the typical science of medicine approach, and include a critical chapter about breaking the news to the parents and family. I don't recall another book that addresses this important yet ignored aspect of the art of pediatric ophthalmology.

This is targeted at pediatric or retina ophthalmologists/fellows and it will quickly find its way into their hands and practice. The authors are all well recognized experts, and this handbook has achieved its goal as a practical reference.

The authors cover the most common topics from hereditary and congenital disorders, to acquired childhood vascular lesions and ROP. High quality photographs accompany each new diagnosis which capture the most characteristic qualities for that diagnosis. However, it would be nice to have a series of "normals" perhaps at the very end of the handbook for comparison when educating families, medical students, and residents.

From treating rheumatoid arthritis to tendon repair, this lavishly illustrated text examines nearly 100 cases of common elbow, hand and wrist surgeries as performed by leading experts. You will review techniques for treating compression neuropathy, amputations, arthroscopic procedures, joint reconstruction, and arthrodesis, demonstrated by high-quality, full-color intraoperative photographs, x-rays, and illustrations. A practical refresher when planning your operative strategy, as well as a useful general reference, the book offers such special features as:

Key features:

-More than 200 color illustrations that provide dynamic representations for easy visualization of techniques -Combines both trauma and elective surgery in one convenient volume -Pearls and pitfalls to help avoid complications and problems -Step-by-step descriptions of the newest techniques for carpal tunnel syndrome, arthroscopic assisted distal radius fixation, scaphoid percutaneous reduction, and more! -Each chapter written by experienced specialists who perform these surgeries on a daily basis

Incorporating both outstanding graphics and clear, practical information, this book is a must for orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists, emergency room physicians, trauma specialists, plastic surgeons, residents, and fellows. It is also an ideal way to prepare for the CAQ in hand surgery, and to "confer" with your colleagues on the most current and effective surgical techniques for the hand and wrist.

Utilizing a new approach to the surgical textbook, the authors provide concise discussions of 90 clinical conditions using one specific clinical case as an example for each. Chapters are arranged by type of injury or condition, including environmental injuries, infections, nerve injuries, vascular disorders, wrist instability (and arthroscopy), congenital anomalies, and tumors. Each unit begins with a short history and clinical presentation of the case used as example, followed by brief notes about the physical examination, diagnostic studies, differential diagnoses, diagnosis, and non-surgical management. Sections describing the surgical treatment of the condition are longer and include illustrations—often in color. Alternative treatment methods and possible complications are also discussed.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of elective and traumatic hand and wrist disorders. The authors not only address treatment options, but also describe pitfalls to watch out for and pearls to help obtain optimal results.

It is authored by top names in the field of hand and wrist surgery, offering the reader the ability to see how the masters of this art handle these challenging problems. This would be a great addition to the library of any orthopedic, plastic, or hand surgeon. It is also a handy guide for preparation for the CAQ examination.

The layout of this book confines chapters to narrow topics, which makes this book useful in developing a plan for dealing with real clinical situations. For example, hand fractures are divided into particular bones and joints, or even parts of the bone, rather than dealt with in an all inclusive chapter.

Description:

This lavishly illustrated, full-color atlas provides a state-of-the-art guide to colonoscopy. Leading experts distill years of clinical experience into an easily accessible, didactic text presenting all the essential information nedeed by healthcare professionals in the endoscopy unit. Atlas of Colonoscopy opens with an overview of the colonoscopy workstation and guidelines for effective handling of instruments, providing the reader with valuable instruction for basic examination procedures, patient preparation, and endoscope insertion. The book then presents detailed descriptions of the clincal picture, diagonsis, and treatment options for such disorders as diverticulosis and diverticulitis, polyposis syndromes, malignant and submucosal tumors, cikutus, gastrointestinal bleeding, and more. The authors describe the latest techniques in endoscopic intervention - polypetomy, mucosectomy, tumor therapy, hemostasis, decompression tube placement-with succinct descriptions of indications, success rates of various treatments, as well as the range of possible complications, with recommendations for how to manage them.

Aimed at health-care professionals who are interested in learning more about colonscopy (though also useful for the experienced gastroenterologist), this atlas begins with a very detailed guide to equipment and examination techniques, complete with three-dimensional computerized views of scope positioning, photographs demonstrating how to apply pressure over each colon section, and illustrations demonstrating loop techniques. The three main sections then cover normal examination procedure and non-pathological findings, pathological findings, and endoscopic intervention. Topics include safety of the patient and monitoring; modern endoscopic techniques such as magnifying or zoom endoscopy and fluorescence endoscopy; normal appearance of the intestinal segments; vascular malformations and other vascular lesions; rare diseases and disorders; polypectomy and mucosectomy; interventional tumor therapy; and decompression tube placement.

This beautifully illustrated atlas of colonoscopy offers both newcomers and seasoned colonoscopists a state-of-the-art guide to total colonoscopy. It includes an accessible introduction to colonoscopy, practical guides and tips for the novice and experienced practitioner alike and also provides information on the latest techniques and developments in interventional colonoscopy.

The authors wishes to provide an all-encompassing guide to diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy that would be of interest to both novices and experienced gastroenterologists. They succeed in these lofty goals because of the numerous outstanding illustrations and photos that depict normal and advanced techniques as well as extensive coverage of endoscopic colonic pathology.

The book is aimed at health-care professionals who are interested in learning more about colonoscopy. It also provides more experienced practitioners with useful colonoscopic tips and tricks in an orderly and organized fashion. The main author is professor and medical director of the Augsburg Clinic in Germany and his able contributors are members of the endoscopic team at this institution.

The atlas is divided in four sections, namely general information which contains a short chapter on modern endoscopic techniques such as chromoendoscopy and fluorescence endoscopy, normal examination procedure and findings, pathological findings, and endoscopic intervention techniques. This is a lavishly illustrated atlas that offers an accessible introduction to colonoscopy. It provides guidance for instrument insertion and carefully describes normal findings in the various colon segments using a logical easy-to-follow layout. Detailed descriptions and multiple illustrations of numerous pathological findings follow. Endoscopic criteria and differential diagnoses are provided for all major colonic diseases. Finally the atlas describes interventional colonoscopic techniques including polypectomy, mucosectomy and the treatments such as thermocoagulation and stricture dilation. Shortcomings are the lack of more extensive coverage of chromoendoscopy, confocal endoscopy and stent placement for malignant stricture palliation.

Synthesis of Essential Drugs

This book represents an effort to express a long overdue need of compiling information which has been accumulated over the course of more than 30 years of our work in the area of the synthesis of medicinal drugs. Our effort fills obvious gaps that exist in the literature of drug synthesis.

The synthesis of various groups of drugs are presented in an order similar to that traditionally presented in a pharmacology curriculum. This was done with a very specific goal in mind - to harmonize the chemical aspects with the pharmacology curriculum in a manner useful to chemists.

Practically every chapter begins with an accepted brief definition and description of a particular group of drugs, proposes their classification, and briefly explains the present model of their action. This is followed by a detailed description of methods for their synthesis.

Of the thousands of drugs existing on the pharmaceutical market, we mainly discuss generic drugs that are included in the WHO's "Essential List of Drugs."

For practically all of the 700+ drugs described in the book, references (around 2350) to the methods of their synthesis are given along with the most widespread synonyms.

This book will provide the kind of information that will be of interest to those who work, or plan to begin work in the captivating areas of biologically active compounds and the synthesis of medicinal drugs.

* Provides a brief description of methods of synthesis, activity and implementation of all drug types
* Includes synonyms
* Includes over 2300 references.
